How to solve the mould issue in your house

Have you notice your wall has been infested by black spots or sometimes white patches present at your basement floor or the slick orange film forms at your kitchen drain. Well, that is actually a mould and it can be found almost everywhere. Molds can play an important role in our nature by breaking down dead leaves, plants, and trees. Molds thrive on moisture and reproduce by means of tiny, lightweight spores that travel through the air. Besides, mould in a small amount would likely not cause any harm. However, when mould is present at your home it will continue to reproduce if it is left without being tended.

If you're sensitive to mould and inhale a large number of spores, you could experience health problems. Mould could lead to many health risks especially to infant and children, elderly, people with weak immune system such as liver diseases patient, cancer patient, chronic lung diseases patient and even to normal healthy occupants in the room.

So what can you do if your home becomes a breeding ground for moulds?

The best approach is preventing the mould before it becomes a problem. The key to mould prevention is simple - moisture control.

Here are five ways to curb moisture indoors.

1. Identify problem areas in your homes and correct them.

Do you notice any frequent condensation occurring at home ? is there any water stains on the ceiling or walls?

Preventing mould may seem as easy as just by removing it. However, without a proper way of removing the mould, it will keep coming back. Hence, it is vital to identify the root cause and address the problem first then only we can apply the preventive action for the growing mould at our home.

2. Immediately dry the wet area

Mould thrives when there is moisture present in the area. Usually, moisture is created if water seepage occurs after rainfall or flood and accumulation of pipe leakage. If you experience any of these, make sure to dry all furniture, carpet, bedding, floor or walls immediately. Never leave wet things untended to as it tends to be the starting point for mould to propagate. Put on rubber gloves and clean with a strong cleaning agent (Clorox, etc). Put on a face mask for protection against airborne spores. Stubborn and long unattended areas may require the use of Ultraviolet lamps to kill the molds.

3. Provide proper ventilation in the area

While it seems that you are doing all to ensure the area stays dry, but the mould keeps coming back even after removing it. It could be your routine at home that causes the mould to keep coming back. Surprisingly all the essential routine that you are doing at home without proper ventilation in the area promotes the growth of mould. Make sure that activities as trivial as washing laundry, bathing, showering, cooking or any other high moisture area are given proper ventilation.

4. Monitor your humidity indoors

It is recommended to keep the humidity level at home around 30 to 60 percent. When mould is present in the area it means that the humidity in the area is high. Excess humidity also can be detected when there are pipe leakage, condensation on the wall and etc. The easiest way to keep your humidity at home balanced is by using a dehumidifier where it helps adsorb excess moisture in the air and keeps your house mould free. A dehumidifier keeps the air at a pre-set humidity level.

5. Improve your air flow at home

The other way to prevent mould growth is to increase the circulation of air at home. Open doors between rooms open your closets door and move the furniture away from the walls. These actions help by bringing fresh air into the rooms and also keep the musty smell at bay.
